Chow comes to Mow American Pizzas

After
pizzas and burgers, it's the Chinese fast food that is set to take
its share of the fledgling Rs 500 crore fast food retail sector in
the country. Taking a pioneering step is the Delhi-based Trak Services
which has partnered with the US-based Rs 500 crore Mark Pi International
Chinese fast food chain to open 240 Mark Pi outlets. Trak, which will
serve as the master franchisee for Mark Pi in the Indian subcontinent,
plans to open 20 outlets in Delhi by the end of 2004.

Mac to taste mall success
Apart
from dishing out new delicacies, McDonald's India is looking at cashing
in on the mushrooming malls, multiplexes and large format stores in
urban centres for expanding its retail presence. The company is expecting
growth from the malls, multiplexes and other such new retail formats,
given the advantages of location, size, customer comfort and a right
tenant-mix. Of the 50 McDonald's outlets across the country, around
30 per cent are located within malls and multiplexes, 50 per cent
are exclusive outlets, and the balance are drive-throughs, which are
a mix of independent as well as joint initiatives. McDonald's has
taken the decision to take the number of restaurants to 100 by 2006.
The company is also planning for tie-ups with oil marketing companies
for setting up McDonald's outlets at gas stations. McDonald's is also
eager to set up more outlets at places like railway stations.
Venus
to heat water in foreign markets
Standard
Electric Appliances, the manufacturers of the Venus brand of water
heaters, is repositioning itself to take on the domestic and global
giants with a range of products powered by different sources of energy,
including solar and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The company has
taken steps to obtain international quality IEC certification and
is adapting its products to the safety standards of countries in Asia,
Africa, Europe and North America. The company is readying to expand
domestically and in the global market by scaling up its degree of
competitiveness in terms of price, quality, safety and environment-friendliness.
Gitanjali
Jewels plans exclusive GiliWorld retail outlets
In
an effort to further the reach of its brand, Gitanjali Jewels Ltd
plans to launch exclusive retail outlets named GiliWorld. GiliWorld
will display the entire range of products under the umbrella of Gitanjali
Jewels. The company is targeting smaller towns and cities as it is
looking to tap the latent demand for diamond studded jewellery at
these places. In the next couple of years, the company is looking
at around 50 GiliWorld outlets all over the country. The focus would
be more on smaller towns and cities rather than a heavy presence in
major metropolises.
Coffee
Day Xpress takes kiosk route
Amalgamated
Bean Coffee Trading Co Ltd (ABCTL) has launched its concept of retailing
food and beverages through the kiosk route. ABCTL's sixth and latest
division, Coffee Day Xpress, has set up some 43 kiosks at petrol pumps,
corporate canteens, hospitals, malls, airports and theatres in the
four metros and Bangalore and Hyderabad. The objective is to grow
this to 150 by the end of fiscal '02-'03 and 600 by '04-'05 end. The
company realized that this was one segment which could be spun off
and grown as something in between the premium coffee café lifestyle
category and that of ABCTL's commonly frequented vending machine outlets.
Coffee Day has also entered the packaged coffee market with the launch
of 'Coffee Day Perfect'. The company has tied up with GlaxoSmithkline
Consumer Healthcare for distribution. GlaxoSmithkline, a leading player
in FMCG product marketing, will distribute the product throughout
the state through its strong sales and distribution network. On the
other hand, coffee chain Barista has joined hands with Corner Bookstore,
a company promoted by D C Books, to open a chain of bookstores at
select Barista outlets all over India. Barista is also aggressively
looking at the eastern region for expansion. While at present there
are 130 Barista outlets across the country, the company intends to
raise this number to 200 by the end of the current financial year.

coffee market with the launch of Coffee Day Perfect. The
company has tied up with GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Healthcare for distribution.
GlaxoSmithkline, a leading player in FMCG product marketing, will
distribute the product throughout the state through its strong sales
and distribution network. On the other hand coffee chain Barista has
joined hands with Corner Bookstore, a company promoted by D C Books,
to open a chain of bookstores at select Barista outlets all over India.
Barista is also aggressively looking at the eastern region for expansion.

Amoretto's
Retail to expand national presence
Amoretto's
Retail Pte Ltd, which is into Amoretto's chain of juice cafes, is
on an expansion spree. It is also in the process of forward integration.
To start with, the company is planning to expand its number of Amoretto's
juice cafes from 10 to 180 across the country in the next five years.
The company is planning to foray into the packaged fruit juice segment
under the umbrella brand Amoretto's next year. Amoretto Retail is
also for the first time, planning to set up five health centres called
'Amorettos' in India in the next two years. So far, all Amoretto's
juice cafes were company-owned, but now they are taking the franchisee
route to expand in a big way.
Apollo
eyes new markets for healthcare clinics
Apollo
Health and Lifestyle Ltd (AHLL), a subsidiary of the Apollo Group
of Hospitals, plans to set up around 250 day-to-day healthcare clinics
across the country. Having already set up these clinics in the North,
the company plans to look at Maharashtra now. With this move, the
company will also face competition from several quarters. These include
the out-patient-departments (OPDs) of other major hospitals, standalone
specialists offering similar services, along with several other state-run
hospitals.

to open more outlets
McDonalds
which is currently operating 50 fast food restaurants in different
parts of India plans to double the figure within the next three years.
The company wants to first concentrate on metros and then open branches
in other parts of the cities. It wants to set up outlets only in those
cities where they can ensure quality of products.
Nirula's
lines up Rs 90 cr expansion
The
Nirula's group plans to foray outside the national capital region
by expanding its chain of family style restaurants, express stores
and delivery outlets in six zones across India. The group plans to
pump in an investment of Rs 90 crore in the next three years, a major
part of which will come from the franchisee model that the company
has rolled out. The company plans to add 100 new stores to the existing
64 in six new zones across India in the next three years.
