Domestic Franchise Companies in India Today, there are about 1800 domestic franchisors in India. In a clear departure from the trends visible in the US and Western European countries, franchising in India is dominated by the IT education sector, which alone accounts for 40 per cent of the Indian franchising business. This is followed by IT-enabled services with 14 per cent and business services at 11 per cent. According to Gaurav Marya, CEO of the Franchising World, companies in IT education can be termed the pioneers in the franchise industry in India. NIIT and Aptech are two Indian IT franchise companies that have successfully expanded to 2400 outlets and a presence in almost 52 countries, says Marya. Although there are examples of successful domestic and international franchises in India, industry experts report a need for greater sophistication and professionalism in Indian franchise companies. Craig Slavin, owner of the international franchise consulting firm, Franchise Architects, Chicago, Illinois, does not expect major improvements any time soon. Clearly frustrated, Slavin says, I won't do business in India right now. Franchising is a wealth building concept. It helps the middle to mid-upper class build assets and wealth through owning their own business. With the projects I have worked in India I have yet to find a company that understands that. It is very dictatorial, much like franchising was in its early days. Slavin continues, They appear interested in learning about western business practices but have an inability to implement them.
