Cornish Pasty Company Expands with New Spanish Shop

UK - Crantock Bakery, the award-winning makers of Cornish pasties, is flying the Cornish flag abroad with the opening of a brand new shop in Spain.

Forget a warm pasty on the beaches of Marazion, lovers of the pastry treat will now be able to enjoy their favourite snack on the Costa Blanca shores of Puerto de Mazarrón, the latest of seven Spanish towns to be graced with an outlet selling Crantock Bakery products.

Crantock has teamed up with two Spanish-based retailers – ‘The Pasty Shack’ and ‘Tasty Pastry’ – who are opening up shops across Spain. Since last autumn ‘The Pasty Shack’, which operates the new Mazarrón store, already has five shops up and running and three more are in the pipeline to open in the next six weeks. Meanwhile the Newquay-based bakery is exporting its pasties to Germany, Portugal, and Holland.

Crantock’s Managing Director Nick Ringer said: “We very much see the future of the pasty business as being in developing new markets whether in the UK or Europe. Crantock pasties can now be found across Europe from Gibraltar to Berlin and the Spanish market is an essential element of our growth strategy.”

All pasties are made in Cornwall at Crantock’s Indian Queens bakery, to a traditional Cornish recipe, and hand-crimped before being blast frozen for transit.

Crantock’s Exports Manager Leigh Loomes said: “Many locals and holidaymakers alike, particularly those with children, want to be out enjoying the sunshine and our shops offer the perfect opportunity to buy a delicious, hearty warm snack and eat it on the beach.”

Barry Yates, co-director of The Pasty Shack, said business at the new Mazarrón store has been booming in the first weeks and lots of locals had been trying out the shop’s pasties as well as holidaymakers.

“Business is going brilliantly so far,” he said. “Crantock Cornish pasties are a big hit in Spain!”
