Franchise Finance - What do the banks want?

About the Author - David B Weusten

David draws on his 21 years of banking experience (ANZ Bank) in New Zealand and internationally, to bring this guide to you. His international experience was gained in the Solomon Islands where for two years he was Operations Supervisor (Manager), managing the administration side of the bank in the Solomon Islands.

During that time he gained experience in

  • - All aspects of financial reporting, from gathering raw data to final submission
  • - Reviewing and implementing improvements in systems and procedures
  • - Control of internal audit, ensuring adherence to bank policies/guidelines
  • - Overseeing training, progression and recruitment
  • - Handling all aspects of the bank's taxation; including country differences timing and permanent differences, payments and provisioning
  • - Product development
  • - Marketing and advertising, including media liaison
  • - Bank's compliance with Government legislation
  • - Liquidity management and treasury functions, including cash retention monitoring
  • - Asset management including depreciation
  • On return to the ANZ Bank in New Zealand in 1995, David was appointed Relationship Manager in the Christchurch Business Centre. He continued to focus on his clients' welfare and this led to his client numbers growing significantly.

In 1998 David was appointed Business Development Manager for the ANZ Bank covering the South Island. On his return to New Zealand, David became involved in franchising and attended the Business Expos in Christchurch, on behalf of the bank. This interest and involvement with franchising led to David's appointment as one of the Specialist Franchise Managers for the ANZ Bank in Christchurch in 2000. David left the bank in November 2000 and set up Financial Service Providers Ltd in Christchurch.
